About Aptos
Learning Center
Aptos Learning Center had its start in the
seaside community of Aptos nearly thirty years
ago when Carol Beckstrom opened Aptos Instruction
in 1979. Business grew rapidly in the late
eighties and eventually there were seventeen
full and part-time instructors, including
her daughter, Aimee Beckstrom Escalante.
In 1991, Carol Beckstrom expanded her business
to Los Gatos. By the late 1990’s, Carol’s
health began to fail and she was forced to
reduce the size of her business. Along with
two of her most trusted and valued instructors,
Gaye Bivins and Nancy Kloepfer, she formed
Aptos Learning Center.
After Carol’s passing in 2000, Gaye
and Nancy continued to operate Aptos Learning
Center. In 2008, Aimee Beckstrom Escalante
returned to the Aptos area and began to work
alongside Gaye and Nancy and continued her
mother’s dream.
Aimee Beckstrom Escalante grew up in Aptos
and taught her first student in 1986. Throughout
high school and during her summers in college
she trained directly under her mother. In
1994, Aimee was the first undergraduate to
be accepted into and complete the Live, Learn
and Teach Program at the University of New
Hampshire in Durham. In 1994, she graduated
with Honors from the University of Colorado
at Boulder.
After graduation, Aimee moved to Colorado,
but continued to work with Carol on evaluations
and reports. In 2001, she received a Masters
of Arts in Writing from Seton Hill College.
Before moving back to California in early
2008, Aimee worked as a literature and composition
instructor at Nova Southeastern University
in Florida. Aimee is married to a pilot in
the US Air Force and has two children who
will be attending Valencia Elementary School
in the fall.
