"The
tutors at the Aptos Learning Center
and the Lindamood Bell® / LIPS®
methodology has given our son the foundation
for reading that makes sense to the
way he learns.
When he had first started tutoring with
ALC about six months ago, he was a full
year below grade level in all areas
of Language Arts. Now he has almost
fully caught up.
Thank you so much Aptos Learning Center!" |

Academic Assessments
Our trained examiners can assess you or your
child to help affirm and/or discover strengths
and weaknesses in areas that affect academics.
Our assessments include examinations in reading,
spelling, comprehension, syntax, visualization,
phonemic awareness, and vocabulary. After
each assessment, we provide a thorough written
report and conference which detail the results
of the tests and any recommendations for instruction.
Reading
and Spelling
Do you often catch yourself or your child
reading or spelling words incorrectly? Such
as spelling “gril” for
girl or “sugtion” for
suggestion or reading "stream"
as steam or "prison" for
person?
These kinds of errors in reading and spelling,
including shifts, omissions, additions, repetitions,
and substitutions for sounds or letters, are
common when someone has difficulty with an
awareness for the sounds within words, or
phonemic awareness. At Aptos Learning Center,
we help our students to incorporate all parts
of their brain in the reading and spelling
process—how does the word look on the
page, how does it sound spoken, and how does
it feel when spoken. By incorporating all
these steps our students learn to self-correct
and become independent readers and spellers.
At Aptos Learning Center we use the highly
structured and proven program, Lindamood®
Phonemic Sequencing (LiPS), which
establishes sensory integration between the
visual, auditory, and oral-motor input. The
program develops best under daily stimulation
and when carried through to the multi-syllable
level.
Additionally, we work to stimulate and strengthen
our students’ ability to image symbols
within words to help with accurate spelling
and reading. Symbol Imagery can be successfully
developed and strengthened by using Seeing
Stars®, an integrated reading
and spelling program developed by Nanci Bell.
Comprehension
How do you teach a student, child or adult
to get the main idea of a paragraph? A page?
A conversation? Or even a movie? You can:
define a main idea, help the student find
which sentences tell the main idea, or even
have the student find the main idea from provided
choices, yet none of these options enable
the student to independently get the whole
picture, the gist, the gestalt of what they
have read or heard. You need another option
to develop good comprehension, an option that
focuses on the processes that enable complete
comprehension.
Good comprehension is closely tied to a person’s
ability to automatically get an “imaged
gestalt”, a complete picture that includes
details related to gross concepts such as
size, color, shape, and what, as well as the
finer concepts of movement, mood, background,
and perspective. This is not a series of isolated
images, but a complete picture that tells
the whole story of what has been read or heard.
A percentage of the population, perhaps as
much as a third, for whatever reason, does
not have the necessary processing developed
to the point where gestalt imagery is possible.
Fortunately, it is possible to develop this
process to the point where it is automatic
and enables an individual to develop higher
level comprehension and thinking skills. When
this occurs, remarkable things happen.
Reading becomes enjoyable, jokes are funny,
movies are easier to follow, conversations
and lectures are understood, directions are
easier to follow, note taking, studying, and
test taking are not as frustrating, and a
foundation for written language and oral expression
is developed. This process can be developed
by the stimulation of concept imagery to enhance
a student’s skills in comprehension.
As imagery is stimulated, the task extends
to visualizing and verbalizing words, sentences,
paragraphs, and pages of written language.
At Aptos Learning Center we use the techniques
outlined in the Visualizing and Verbalizing
Program® (V/V) by Nanci Bell. Math
How do you learn how to make sense of a word
problem? What does 56 divided by 9 really
mean?
Like good comprehension, an understanding
in math is dependent on concept imagery—you
must be able to visualize the concept with
which you are working to truly understand
it. It is not enough to simply memorize multiplication
tables or π, pi, to 7 digits.
At Aptos Learning Center, we develop an understanding
of math by using imagery and language as the
basis for instruction. We begin with a focus
on concrete ideas and, through a focus on
imagery integration, develop your student's
skills further through computation. Our math
program is based on the On Cloud Nine
Program® developed by Nanci Bell
and Kimberly Tuley. |
